Frequently Asked Questions
about group stays with HI Canada
What to Expect
How far in advance can I make a booking? We are currently accepting bookings through to March 31st, 2025.
How big is a "group"? Can I book with my friends and family? Groups are any group of 10 or more people, whether that's an organized group like a tour or a team, or just a bunch of friends and family travelling together.
Can I book multiple hostels all at once? Yes. Your dedicated group coordinator will look after that!
Will my group all stay together? One of the perks of hostelling is that no two hostels are the same! While the room configurations vary between hostels, we'll always do our best to allocate rooms and beds to suit your group's needs, however, this may depend on other groups or guests that have already booked in and had rooms assigned.
How big are the dorms? What's in the private rooms? This really depends on the hostel, since they're all different! Select a hostel above to learn a bit more about the room configurations at the hostel you're interested in, or send us an inquiry and we'll give you the lay of the land.
Will the rooms be private to just my group? We will do our best to make your rooms private to your group. This depends on room availability and your numbers, as well as the configuration of each property. Typically, our pricing is based on the full use of the room, which ensures your privacy.
Can you help me arrange activities for my group? We have many activity partners in each location and we'd be happy to share our knowledge and passion to help you plan your trip.
Is there a kitchen we can use? Yes, all of our hostels have fully equipped kitchens. You just need to bring the groceries. For specific details about what's available in each kitchen, select a hostel above to learn more or get in touch.
Is catering available? Catering is available to groups at many hostels, except our remote wilderness hostels in the Rockies.
Is there a meeting room we can use? Hostels are known for their communal spaces! Many of our hostels have meeting rooms or spaces available for your group to use. For details, get in touch with the hostel or a groups representative.
What safety measures do you have in place at your hostels? All HI Canada hostels comply with health measures imposed by local, provincial and federal governments. To learn more about our safety measures visit hihostels.ca/staysafe. Many of our larger resort and urban hostels are staffed 24-hours a day and sleeping rooms are equipped with secure key-card locks, and the comfort and safety of all of our guests is our top priority. Many hostels also provide secure in-room storage (bring your own lock) and luggage and gear storage for all guests.
Group Stay Policies
Is there a discount for group bookings? Generally groups will get our member rate, but this may vary depending on group size, time of year and the property.
Is a deposit required? Yes, a 20% deposit applies to groups of up to 50 people or to groups that book up to 50% of the hostel's beds. For larger groups, a 50% deposit applies. Your deposit is charged upon reservation, and full payment is due 28 days prior to your arrival.
Can I make changes to my booking? Of course you can make changes! Your group coordinator will take care of the details
What is your cancellation policy? While your groups agent will explain the applicable cancellation policy in detail, generally speaking you can cancel without penalty up to 28 days prior to arrival. If you cancel 14 to 28 days prior to arrival, you'll forfeit your deposit and receive a 50% refund. Reservations cancelled within 14 days of arrival are non-refundable.
Is there a surcharge for single occupancy? Dorm rooms are priced by the room based on the total number of beds in the room. If you wish to leave beds empty, you still must pay the full room fee. Private rooms are priced based on double occupancy and there is no single surcharge.
What payment forms do you accept? Visa and Mastercard.
Can I make changes to my booking? Of course you can make changes! Our group coordinator will take care of the details.
Do you have any age limits for the groups that stay with you? There are no age limits for groups that stay with us. Youth groups must be properly chaperoned.
Is there a maximum group size allowed? Maximum group sizes depend on the hostel and the time of year. However, it is possible in some cases to book out the entire hostel, which is particularly popular at our wilderness hostels, however each hostel's maximum capacity varies.
