September 21st
#SayHIforPeace
On September 21st, as part of the UN's International Day of Peace, HI Canada and Hostelling International hostels around the world are joining forces to celebrate how hostels bring people together to create a more peaceful world every day.
In celebration of the United Nations' International Day of Peace on September 21st, Hostelling International proudly presents the Say HI for Peace campaign—a day for our community in 60+ countries to unite through activities and initiatives, all aimed at making the world a more peaceful place.
Say HI! for Peace 2025
This year, HI Canada will donate $1 from every stay booked at participating hostels on September 21st to pflag Canada, an organization that provides peer support, education, and advocacy for 2SLGBTQ+ people and their families. Supporting 2SLGBTQ+ communities and their loved ones fosters peace by promoting acceptance, reducing discrimination, and creating inclusive environments where all people can thrive.
It strengthens Canadian society by affirming all sexual orientations and gender expressions, building bridges of understanding, and ensuring that every person feels valued and respected, all of which are essential for lasting peace and social harmony.

Fostering peace since 1933
Discover how the Say HI! for Peace campaigns by HI Canada has helped our communities in recent years.

Indispire
2024 was a year of continued growth and reflection, especially here in Canada where the path to truth and reconciliation remains at the heart of many conversations. On September 21, the International Day of Peace, HI Canada donated $1 from every overnight stay booked at participating hostels to Indspire, an Indigenous national charity that invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit and Métis students.
Thanks to our incredible guests, we were able to donate a total of $1049.00 in support of Indigenous youth across the country!

Canada's Humanitarian Coalition
2023 was a challenging year for global peace, with war impacting many, especially in Ukraine. That year, HI Canada donated $1 from every stay booked at participating hostels on September 21st to the Humanitarian Coalition in support of the people in Ukraine. Thanks to our guests, a total of $1,134.00 was donated!

Indigenous Women Outdoors
On Sept. 21st, 2022, HI Canada collected 1$ per stay towards the Say HI for Peace campaign, raising a total of 1000$. The funds were donated to Indigenous Women Outdoors, an association that helps indigenous women [*gender-expansive] feel safe on the land. They help them become "leaders in the outdoor industry and to be confident in sharing their knowledge and connection of the land with the greater public".

Cardston Girls Choir
In 2018, Say HI for Peace (formerly Sleep for Peace) raised $2,118 at Canadian hostels. Some of these funds helped the Cardston Girls Choir, an all-female vocal ensemble of 16 teenagers from Alberta, head to Europe to partake in several artistic gatherings like the World Peace Choir Festival. A Solo Travel grant was also awarded to a young woman travelling to Mongolia to study and embark on a cycling adventure from Mongolia to Kazakhstan.

Actions around the world
Since 2013, Hostelling International has celebrated the UN International Day of Peace, through the campaign Say HI for Peace (formerly Sleep For Peace). The campaign has steadily grown over the years and is now celebrated in HI hostels across the world! From contests to in-hostel activities and donations to peace-building charities, Say HI for Peace aims to celebrate how our hostels play a vital role in celebrating peace and cultural awareness every single day, all over the world.
