See you again soon, Jasper!

August 13, 2024

In July 2024, HI Jasper was destroyed by the wildfires that swept through Jasper National Park. This loss has deeply impacted our community, and we, along with many in Jasper, are still navigating a difficult road to recovery.

Jasper's newest hostel

HI Jasper was HI Canada’s newest, purpose-built hostel. In just five short years, it became a network highlight - a home away from home for travellers from all corners of the globe. It wasn't just about the comfy beds or the killer views (though those were pretty awesome). No, what made HI Jasper truly special was the way it brought people together.

In the face of such a devastating loss, you might expect despair. But instead, the Jasper community has responded with incredible love and support. Messages have flooded in from past guests, fellow hostels, and even folks who never had the chance to visit but felt the loss all the same. The outpouring has been nothing short of extraordinary. Thank you!

It reminds us of what matters most— less so the buildings but more so the people we encounter in our travels. Even in the wake of such adversity, the spirit of hostelling endures.

What's next for HI Jasper?

We're not throwing in the towel, that's for sure! The road to recovery might be long and winding, but we're committed to rebuilding. We're dreaming of the day when we can once again welcome our community of travellers back to Jasper, offering a home base for new adventures and friendships.

The HI Jasper of the future may look different, but its heart will remain the same - a place where the magic of travel comes alive.

So keep those hiking boots ready and those travel stories on the tip of your tongue. After all, the best adventures are the ones we share, and the strongest connections come from getting through tough stuff together.

What can we do in the meantime?

  • Support rebuilding efforts: Keep an eye out for fundraising initiatives to help rebuild Jasper or support affected staff and residents. Visit the Municipality of Jasper's website for more information on ways you can help.

  • Plan sustainable trips: Choose eco-friendly accommodations and activities that help preserve the natural beauty of places like Jasper National Park.

  • Stay in our network: Help sustain our not-for-profit hostel network during these challenging times by choosing to stay at other HI hostels across Canada.

  • Spread awareness: Share information about the impact of climate change on beloved travel destinations to encourage more sustainable practices.

  • Return to Jasper: When the residents and businesses are ready to open their doors again, rescheduling your trip will help the town of Jasper recover.

  • Share memories: If you've stayed at HI Jasper, share your experiences with us online with the hashtag #hijasper. These stories keep the spirit of these special places alive.

Jasper wilderness hostels

Amidst the ongoing Jasper wildfires, we've also had to say goodbye to two of our Jasper wilderness hostels, HI Athabasca Falls and HI Maligne Canyon. These places have been a home away from home for so many adventurers. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, shared a memory, or sent a word of encouragement—your love for these wild spaces made them what they were. We can't wait to welcome you back here too, when the time is right.
