Meet HI Smoky Lake, The Nekinan Lodge
We're excited to welcome HI Smoky Lake, The Nekinan Lodge to the HI Canada network: a hostel that brings something new to our community, rooted in place, culture, and connection.
Located just outside the town of Smoky Lake, Alberta, our newest affiliated hostel is operated by the Métis Nation of Alberta and offers travellers a chance to stay somewhere that reflects the land and stories it's part of. It's a quieter destination, best suited to travellers who enjoy slowing down and exploring with intention.
A hostel with a story
“Nekinan” means our home, and that idea shapes the experience here. The lodge was created as a welcoming space for visitors, as well as community gatherings, cultural exchange, and shared experiences.
Inside, the rooms and common areas are designed to feel welcoming and comfortable, reflecting the lodge's strong connection to Métis culture and community. Accommodation ranges from shared rooms to private options, making it a good fit for solo travellers, families, and small groups alike.
As with many HI hostels, the heart of the building is in the shared spaces — a communal kitchen, lounge areas, and outdoor fire pits where conversations tend to happen naturally.
Exploring the area
HI Smoky Lake is located 1.5 hours from Edmonton and is a good base for exploring this part of Alberta, especially if you're interested in cultural and outdoor experiences. Nearby highlights include:
- Métis Crossing: Alberta's first major Métis cultural interpretive centre, with historic river lots, traditional crafts, and immersive experiences.
- The Iron Horse Trail: Part of the Trans Canada Trail system, great for walking, cycling, or exploring on two wheels.
- The town of Smoky Lake: A small community with local events, scenic landscapes, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Part of the community
At HI Canada, we're always looking to grow our network in ways that reflect our values: openness, learning, affordability, and meaningful travel. HI Smoky Lake, The Nekinan Lodge does that by offering a place where staying overnight also means engaging with local culture and community.
We're proud to welcome The Nekinan Lodge to the HI Canada family and to support a hostel that puts community first. If you're planning a trip through Alberta and want to experience a different side of the province, HI Smoky Lake, The Nekinan Lodge is open and ready to welcome you.
