The Green Bikes
A bikepacking project for reforestation
We love travelling, but here's the ugly truth: it usually comes with the hefty carbon footprint of air and car travel. Unfortunately, these travel impacts contribute to global warming — that's why HI Canada is committed to supporting and promoting alternative travel options that are more mindful of their ecological impact. Here's a sneak peek at the latest project supported by the organization, The Green Bikes: two bikepackers who will cross Canada by bike for reforestation.
The Green Bikes: Crossing Canada from West to East by Bike
In April 2024, the green bikers Solène and Kévin will hop on their bikes at HI Vancouver Downtown and set off on a 5000 km journey across Canada, pedalling from hostel to hostel through the HI Canada network, in order to promote cycling tourism as an eco-friendly mode of travel and raise funds for the reforestation of Canadian forests.
The Goal: Raising Funds to Plant Trees in Canada
During their bike journey, Solène and Kévin will be raising funds to be donated to One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization dedicated to global reforestation. This organization, which operates in 82 countries and has planted over 135.5 million trees in the last decade, stands out for the transparency with which it utilizes its funds.
In Canada, One Tree Planted works to protect the habitat of wild species, increase biodiversity, restore areas affected by large-scale fires, and improve forest cover to build and promote healthy forests.
To learn more about the tree species that will be planted, the six pillars of reforestation, and their funding allocation model, have a look at their canada-focused section of their website.

If you wish to support the cause and help our green bikers plant a maximum of trees to regenerate our beautiful canadian forests, you can make a donation through their fundraising platform, Raisely.
