HI Canada's hostel reopens in downtown Halifax

January 17, 2024

Get ready, the iconic HI Halifax Heritage House hostel is finally reopening its doors this summer, sporting a fresh new look and exciting new features. After a long four-year hiatus, HI Halifax is now undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, transforming itself into a modern haven for travellers while preserving its historic charm and home away from home feel.

From Community Support to Modern Marvel

Unlike many hostels around the world that faced closure during the pandemic, HI Halifax took a different path. In 2020, it partnered with the North End Community Health Services (NECHS) to provide crucial housing support during a time of need. As the pandemic faded, HI Canada seized the opportunity to embark on a renovation project that would redefine the guest experience and offer an elevated boutique hostel experience in the Halifax historic district.

Striking a Balance: Heritage Meets Modernity

Nestled in the heart of Halifax's historic district, the hostel's building boasts a rich history, dating all the way back to 1864. This hostel renovation project aimed to balance the need for 21st century modern upgrades with the desire to preserve the building's 19th century heritage. Working closely with Design360 and adhering to strict municipal regulations, HI Canada is proud and excited to provide a top-notch hostel experience and environment that seamlessly blends local charm with contemporary comfort.

What Awaits our Guests and Members

Get ready to be greeted by a revamped space! When HI Halifax reopens, it’ll be offering:

"Providing affordable places to stay across Canada is core to our mission as a not for profit association. It's not just about a place to stay, it's about opening doors to exploration, adventure and meaningful connections with other travellers. That's why we were so determined to reopen HI Halifax as soon as possible. We can't wait to welcome guests back and be part of their journey through the beautiful Atlantic region" said Julius Van Wyk, CEO of HI Canada.
