Important Update

Jasper Wildfires

July 26th, 2025

A new chapter begins.

Earlier this year, we shared that we would rebuild HI Jasper—and now, we’re excited to say: we’re truly moving forward.

With our development permit approved and construction expected to begin this fall, we’re preparing to open a next-generation hostel by 2026. This new version will carry forward what travellers loved while addressing what’s needed for the future.

This project is more than just a rebuild—it’s a chance to reflect, evolve, and respond to what we’ve learned. We’re designing a hostel that’s stronger, more welcoming, and more deeply connected to the needs of both travellers and the Jasper community. The new building will use materials better able to withstand wildfire conditions, include expanded staff housing to help address local shortages, and offer more comfortable shared spaces. A larger café and an open community area will create new opportunities for travellers and locals to come together, share stories, and experience Jasper side by side.

“Rebuilding HI Jasper is more than a construction project—it’s a commitment to the values that shape us: community, strength, and connection,” says Julius van Wyk, CEO of HI Canada. “We’re proud to return to Jasper with a hostel that honours the past and embraces the future.”

Board Chair Lenore Neudorf shares a similar sense of optimism: “In its years of operation, HI Jasper welcomed thousands of travellers from around the world. We can’t wait to open our doors again and continue our mission to create a more open and connected world—right here in Jasper.”

We’ll be sharing updates as the project progresses. For now, we’re full of gratitude—and looking forward to what comes next.

Dear HI Canada Members,

We have some hopeful and exciting news to share from Jasper.

After the heartbreaking loss of HI Jasper in last summer’s wildfires, we’ve been incredibly busy behind the scenes. The road back to Jasper hasn’t been easy, but we’re committed to returning to this special place—and we’re thrilled to share that plans to rebuild are officially underway.

HI Canada is working closely with Parks Canada, the Town of Jasper, and a dedicated team of contractors and partners to bring travellers back to Jasper National Park. While there’s still much work to be done, we hope to break ground in the coming months on a brand-new hostel in Jasper. Our vision is to once again welcome backpackers, adventurers and explorers to experience the magic of the Rockies through the spirit of hostelling.

Stay tuned, Jasper adventures await.

Dear HI Canada Members,

I have very sad news to share. Our newest hostel, HI Jasper, which opened in 2019, was destroyed in the wildfire burning through Jasper National Park in July 2024. The wildfire, driven by extreme weather conditions, reached the town of Jasper and has resulted in the total loss of HI Jasper.

Two very special wilderness hostels, HI Athabasca Falls and HI Maligne Canyon, have also been lost to this fire.

As many of you know firsthand, both HI Athabasca Falls and HI Jasper were much-loved hostels in our network, offering breathtaking access and experiences within Jasper National Park. Although we are heartbroken today, we look forward to the future when we can rebuild in Jasper National Park, continuing our mission to bring together travellers from around the world to experience this very extraordinary place.

On behalf of my fellow board members and staff, we thank you for your continued support.

Warm regards,

Dear HI Canada Members,

I know we’re all feeling a mix of tremendous sadness and anxiety regarding the wildfire situation in the town of Jasper and Jasper National Park. The distressing images we've seen in the media weigh heavily on our hearts, and our thoughts are with the entire Jasper community as they face this crisis. We extend our support and thanks to the first responders and volunteers bravely battling this devastating wildfire, hoping for their continued strength and safety during these challenging times.

We are actively seeking information about the status of HI Jasper and the extent of the damage it may have sustained in last night’s fire. We seek similar information about HI Athabasca Falls and our other three hostels in Jasper National Park. While we wait for further details, I am relieved to share that our staff and guests were safely evacuated on Monday night thanks to the incredible efforts of our hostel teams in Jasper. The HI Canada Board of Directors will continue to work closely with management to ensure the best possible outcome for guests and staff.

While our buildings may be at risk, and we possibly face the loss of hostels beloved by many of us, the spirit of hostelling and our belief in the hostelling movement remain unwavering. Your HI Canada Board and staff are steadfast in their commitment to our mission: providing spaces for travellers, both near and far, to gather and experience unique people and places in Canada.

I promise to keep you updated as we receive more information. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
