Amalgamation FAQ

The amalgamation of HI Canada and the HIC - PM Region means both Associations consolidate into one new organization operating under the name Hostelling International Canada (HI Canada).

The goal of amalgamating HI Canada and HI Canada - Pacific Mountain Region is to unify a strategic partnership between allied Associations to further Hostelling International’s mission to build a community of conscious travellers who share a greater understanding of people, places and cultures through hostelling.

The amalgamation process makes official a strategic partnership that has been in place for decades.

So while amalgamation does not change our focus, a single Board of Directors streamlines the vision for hostelling in Canada.

It also allows us to reduce costs by functioning with one central office and leadership team, simplifying our operational processes for greater efficiency and efficacy.

HI Canada and HI Canada Pacific Mountain Region officially amalgamated its governance and operations on April 1, 2023.

All valid HI members residing in Canada but outside of the Pacific Mountain Region will soon be invited join the newly formed HI Canada organization and take part in the governance of HI Canada. We hope you’ll join us.

In the meantime, we hope you continue to enjoy over 3,000 hostels in 90 countries and many discounts worldwide.

HIC PM Region members are valid HI Canada members that reside in one of the following provinces or territories:

• British Columbia
• Alberta
• Saskatchewan
• Manitoba
• Yukon Territories
• Northwest Territories
• Nunavut

As of April 1, 2023, there will be one interim Board of Directors who will govern the newly formed Hostelling International Canada. Selected members from both the HI Canada and HIC - PM Region boards will form the interim Board of Directors.

The next board election is planned for 2024.
