Reduced Winter Schedule
This winter, we've made the difficult decision to scale back our operating schedule as a result of lower-than-usual demand. As of January 3rd, some hostels will be shifting to a Thursday to Sunday schedule in key destinations. This change will follow a brief closure period in the fall. See our opening and closure schedule here.
How it works
When can I stay?
As of January 3rd, check-ins can only take place between Thursday and Sunday. Check-outs can only take place between Friday and Monday.
Can I only stay between Thursday and Monday?
You can stay longer at HI Whistler, HI Banff Alpine Centre and HI Jasper, so long as you arrive between Thursday and Sunday and depart between Friday and Monday. You must also be aware that these hostels will have reduced staffing between Monday afternoon and Thursday morning, so you may have a little less assistance around the hostel on those days. However, hostel amenities (including our kitchens) will still be available and housekeeping staff will still be there to keep all shared spaces safe and clean. As part of our regular COVID-19 protocols, there's no housekeeping in guest rooms during your stay. Hostel restaurants and cafés may also be closed midweek. Please note HI Lake Louise Alpine Centre will not accommodate stays on Monday to Wednesday nights.
Can I extend my stay or change my booked dates?
Sure! As long as your new dates fit the schedule described above. Please also keep in mind that our regular cancellation policies apply and reservations must be changed or cancelled at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled arrival.

Which hostels are on a reduced schedule?
HI Whistler, HI Banff Alpine Centre, HI Lake Louise Alpine Centre and HI Jasper will be closed briefly in the fall until December 17th. They'll be operating 7 days a week between December 18th and January 2nd. As of January 3rd, they'll shift to the reduced Thursday to Sunday schedule.
HI Nordegg, Shunda Creek Hostel will reopen after a brief fall closure on January 15th and will operate on the reduced winter schedule.
HI Mosquito Creek and HI Rampart Creek Wilderness Hostels will reopen after a fall closure on December 18th, while HI Athabasca Falls will reopen on January 8th. They'll operate according to their regular winter schedule until the spring. They'll also be available for rent-a-hostel while closed and where available through the winter.
HI Beauty Creek and HI Kananaskis will remain closed until June 2021, however they'll be available on a rent-a-hostel basis throughout the fall and winter. HI Hilda Creek and HI Castle Mountain will also be available on a rent-a-hostel or groups basis only.
HI Vancouver Central, HI Vancouver Downtown, HI Victoria, HI Edmonton, HI Calgary City Centre, HI Regina, HI Penticton, HI Maligne Canyon and HI Mount Edith Cavell will remain closed until spring or summer 2021.
Affiliate hostels operate independently and any closures or schedule changes will be noted on their hostel page on hihostels.ca.
What about groups?
We love 'em. Groups are welcome at all of our hostels, and we can accommodate them at most of our hostels even during a closure period. We also offer our rent-a-hostel option at our wilderness hostels in the Rockies, which is available through the fall and winter. Please reach out and we'll be happy to discuss options.
Are you still taking COVID-19 seriously?
Absolutely. Find out more about how we're keeping you safe. This includes a face mask requirement in shared spaces, reduced capacity, increased cleaning and disinfection and distancing rules. You'll find more detailed information about hostel safety protocols on each hostel's page.
