The principles of sustainable tourism and our not-for-profit status encourage us to enhance the socio-cultural fabric of the community, minimize negative impacts on the natural environment, and harness our entrepreneurial spirit for the economic benefit of our Hostelling Associations and the community.

In embracing these principles, HI-Canada and its Regional Associations commit to the:

  • acceptance of sustainability as our responsibility, thereby strengthening our Associations today and for future generations;
  • inclusion of socio-cultural, ecological and economic impacts when taking actions in the governance of our organizations and the operations of our hostels;
  • measurement of our actions towards sustainability and the publication of those results through our channels of communication.

The HI-Canada Sustainability Charter is based on the core principles of Hostelling International's Sustainability Charter. The Canadian adaptation aims to reflect Canada's diversity.
